New dinosaur was a pint-sized predator

New dinosaur was a pint-sized predator

OXFORD (FOX19) - A Miami University professor is part of a scientific team that has studied and described a newly discovered dinosaur that was lighter in weight than some house cats.

The creature has been named Eodromeous, which means "dawn runner", a reference to its build and to its existence at the dawn of the age of dinosaurs.

Though the animal only weighed 10-15 pounds; its lanky runner's build means it was about 4 feet long, with a long neck and tail.  The little dinosaur's stabbing teeth and hand-like forepaws would have made it an frightening pursuer for a number of smaller creatures.

Scientists believe these dinosaurs were early members of an line that eventually led to the birds.

The team was able to describe a nearly complete skeleton after finding remains from a pair of the dinosaurs in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in what is now South America, but was then p

City of Hamilton deadline bumped by holiday in D.C.

City of Hamilton deadline bumped by holiday in D.C.

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - A public holiday in Washington, D.C. has caused the filing deadline for city income taxes in Hamilton to be delayed for three days.

Here's how this works:

  • The District of Columbia has a holiday called Emancipation Day. It is celebrated on April 16th.
  • April 16th is on a Saturday, but the law in Washington requires the holiday to be celebrated a day earlier.
  • The normal Federal Income Tax filing deadline is April 15th.
  • The Internal Revenue Code says that if the last day for "performing any act" necessary to file taxes falls on a Federal holiday, or a holiday in the District of Columbia, the performance of such an act is considered "timely" if done on the next work day, which in this case is Monday, April 18th.

Miami students stopped amid pine tree assault

Miami students stopped amid pine tree assault

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Oxford Police say a pair of Miami University students was stopped in the act earlier this week when they tried to cut down a thirty-foot pine tree.

The tree was sitting in front of some privately-owned student apartments on South Poplar street.  Sergeant Jim Squance says the student they caught said he and his friend intended to cut down the thirty-foot tree, then lop off the top for Christmas use.

Unfortunately for them, a neighbor noticed what was going on and gave police a call.

The second student, who was the one with the ax, ran away as police arrived, and police say his friend didn't give up his name.

The student was cited to appear in court for disorderly conduct.  Sgt.

Undead to walk the streets of Hamilton

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - If you find yourself in downtown Hamilton Friday night and think the area looks more lively than usual, you'll be completely wrong.

That's because the undead will take over the streets for the "Second Annual Hamilton, Ohio Zombie Walk".  The event will start and end at the municipal parking lot across from the McDonald's restaurant on High Street.  The dearly-departed will trudge to the river, cross under the High-Main Bridge, and return on the other side of High Street.

Zombie walks are in vogue around the world, and Hamilton is leading the trend in the Tri-State.  Tim Couch, one of the organizers, says about 100 people showed up last year and there probably will be more this year, and you're invited to join them.

The event will run from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.  That's plenty of time to travel the route, but as anyone who's ever seen Night of the Living Dead can tell you, zombies move slowly.  In fact,&nb

Mutant pumpkin spotted in Oxford

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Jason Keith of Oxford says this "aggressive" pumpkin plant grew while hidden from sight by a raspberry bush.  It appears that the fruit started developing right in a fence opening.  This photo shows the strange result.

Pumpkins will grow into odd shapes to get around obstacles.  Here's an article with some examples of people doing this intentionally.

Patrol wonders what happened to car on 75

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - When Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers police arrived on northbound 75 between Ohio 122 and Ohio 73 just after midnight Tuesday morning, they found a wrecked Chevrolet Aveo with two injured people in it.

What they didn't find was whatever caused the wreck.

The top of the windshield and the front of the roof were smashed as if hit by a heavy metal object, but that object was nowhere to be found.

Police came back out at daylight to see if they had missed anything in the dark.  They hadn't.

The victims were sent to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton with injuries that didn't appear to be too serious.

Now the patrol has a theory about what might have happened, if not proof.

They received word today that someone had seen a person changing a tire south of the crash scene.

The theory: that a southbound car lost its wheel and tire.  The wheel crossed the highway median to the northbound side of 75.
