Storm flips glass table without breaking it

Storm flips glass table without breaking it

TRENTON, OH (FOX19) - Jennifer Stewart's home in Trenton was hit by one of the strong storms that was scattered around the Tri-State Sunday.

The wind flipped a large glass-topped over, landing it on a couple other items on the porch.  Amazingly, the somewhat fragile glass top survived the experience intact.

No such luck for the sturdy wooden supports on her porch.  (Click on the headline  to see them.)  They were twisted out of position, yanking the uprights with them.

Miami U. professor becomes part of rock history

Miami U. professor becomes part of rock history

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - There's no Rock Hall of Fame for Geology professors, at least not yet, but a Miami University professor has been immortalized by having a mineral named after him.

The substance is called Rakovanite (not to be confused with "Rock-On-ovite"), and is named after John Rakovan, associate professor of geology.

The mineral was first found in the West Sunday mine of Slick Rock Mining District in San Miguel County, Colo.  The naming of the discovered mineral as rakovanite was approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in November 2010. A publication on the structure and crystal chemistry of rakovanite will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Canadian Mineralogist.

The name rakovanite honors Rakovan’s research contributions in mineral-water interface geochemistry, crystallography and crystal chemistry.

Spending Mega Millions prize may be no easy task

Spending Mega Millions prize may be no easy task

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - If you should happen to win the upcoming Mega Millions jackpot, and your goal is to use up all the money as fast as possible, you might want to move out of town.

If you are simply determined to dispose of the money, that's no problem.  You could donate it all to a leading university or hospital.  You could gamble it away around the world.  You could give it away a million at a time to people you met in bars.  If you asked a luxury shipbuilder to use it all on a yacht, they could oblige you.  You could buy the City of Cincinnati a streetcar system.

On the other hand, if you go shopping around the Tri-State at advertised prices, you might find that the money, which is an estimated $198.2 million if taken in cash, goes a long way.

We looked for a group of mostly Cincinnati-area items that a person could buy, and found it hard to use up the money.  For starters, we added up the price of the 50 most-expensive homes c

Clooney's not the only filmmaker in town

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - There's been a ton of talk, sightings, and news coverage as George Clooney and crew have shot scenes for The Ides of March all over the Tri-State.

Meanwhile, quietly, Clooney's co-star Ryan Gosling has completed four films in his spare time, and distributed them to the world on the internet.

Gosling has made a series of movies based on cellphone video and stills, shot and edited in an arty fashion.

One movie is about Cincinnati restaurateur Jeff Ruby, and is called "The Godfather of Cincinnati", where he talks about beginning to get a sense of direction a teenager.  It interpolates offbeat video and sound effects with lo-fi interview video.  Another is about a woman who thought she was transsexual and turned out to be a hermaphrodite.

Bill Nye time travel: tickets gone even before offered

Bill Nye time travel: tickets gone even before offered

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - It sound like a scientific mystery: tickets for a lecture at Miami University by Bill Nye, the Science Guy are gone days before they even were even offered.

Actually, there a logical explanation.  After announcing an appearance by the TV science entertainer and educator, the Miami box office was flooded with inquiries at a rate that was an order of magnitude higher than for other lectures.

Miami now expects that students will snap up all the available tickets, which will leave the remaining interested students outside looking in, along with professors, staff, and the general public.  It is normal policy that students get first priority for Miami University Lecture Series tickets, but with most speakers that is not an issue.

They are holding a lottery, for students only, between now and Wednesday evening.  Then, any tickets that are not picked up by Friday evening will go to other students who entered the lottery but didn'
