Wakeboard for free this Saturday in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Wake Nation Cincinnati is giving wakeboard enthusiasts or anyone with an interest the chance to hit the waves for free.

The Liquid Force “Free For All,” a one-of-a-kind event with music, food, giveaways, professional wakeboarding demos and free wakeboarding for the public.

The free for all will take place in Fairfield's Joyce Park on Saturday, June 15 from 10am - 5pm.

In addition, the public can also get personal tips and pointers from Liquid Force’s global team riders -- such as wakeboard rail-riding expert Kevin Henshaw and wake skating pros Aaron Reed and Danny Hampson -- all top professionals who will be demonstrating their amazing skills on the water.

Also making a return to Wake Nation is local product and former Wake Nation manager Graeme Burress, now part of Liquid Force’s professional team.

ROSS TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - The Ross Township police department will have a front and center role at the Reds vs. Cubs on Sunday. May 26.

The Ross Township Police Department Honor Guard will present the Colors at the Great American Ball Park at the 1:10pm game.

Chief Kramer said “We Started an Honor Guard a Couple of Years ago and I think it’s an Honor to be selected especially during the Memorial Day Weekend”.

The Color Guard will take the field at 12:57pm for the presentation of the colors.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The MLB announced the 30 winners of the 2013 Honorary Bat Girl Contest that recognizes baseball fans who have been affected by breast cancer and demonstrate a commitment to eradicating the disease. 

The winner for the Cincinnati Reds is Josie Shuler of Fairfield Township, who will be recognized during on-field pregame ceremonies Sunday, May 12 (Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers, 1:10 p.m.) at Great American Ball Park.

Josie will receive complimentary game tickets for her and her family, a commemorative Reds jersey and pink wrist bands. Louisville Slugger will be sending her a personalized pink bat engraved with her name.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The first of a three game series will be a tribute to Middletown natives.The Reds game on Monday, May 6 is Middletown night.

Middletown, Ohio natives Chris Carter and Kayla Harrison will be honored during the annual Middletown Night at the ballpark. Carter, who is a 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Harrison, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in judo, will serve as the Honorary Captain of the game.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Warmer temperature this week should add to the fun as Wake nation in Fairfield opens fior a new season.

The award winning watersports’ complex in Fairfield’s Joyce Park is set to open on Wednesday, May 1.

Visitors to Wake Nation this year will find an entirely new configuration of obstacles on the lake, including a brand new state-of-the-art rail, bringing the total number of lake rails and jumps to ten.

At Wake Nation Cincinnati riders can wakeboard, water ski, kneeboard, and wake skate around a 10-acre lake without a boat!  Riders are pulled around the oval lake at speeds of 18-20 miles per hour by a circulating, overhead cable system that runs 35 feet above the water. Six riders can be on the water at the same time.

Miami University Hamilton women's basketball team honored in state capital

COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) — State Representative Wes Retherford  presented a House resolution to the Miami University Hamilton Women’s Basketball Team for its 2013 state title during session of the Ohio House of Representatives this week.

“It was my honor to recognize the Lady Harriers of Miami University Hamilton for their outstanding achievements this basketball season,” Rep. Retherford said.  “Their championship was hard-earned, and these young women will continue to make Miami Hamilton, the City of Hamilton and the State of Ohio proud as they pursue excellence in the future. I look forward to the team bringing home many more championships in the future.”

The 2012-2013 Harriers were the first women’s team to win both the regular season title and the Ohio Regional Campus State Championship in the same year.

Men's baskeball coach and Miami alum being honored after game

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University Athletics will honor legendary men's basketball coach and alum Charlie Coles at halftime of the Miami vs. Kent State men's basketball game on Saturday, March 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The campus will be full of former students as Miami celebrates Alumni Weekend.

Coles, a 1965 Miami University graduate, spent 16 seasons at the helm of the men's basketball program at Miami and served 22 seasons as a head coach in the Mid-American Conference. In 2010-11, Coles was presented with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardian of the Game Pillar Award for Education presented by the Hartford. Coles, the 22nd head coach in Miami history, retired from coaching on March 5, 2012, following the RedHawks' final game.
