Miami's head coach Charlie Coles announces his retirement

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) -Miami University's head coach announced his retirement Monday night after a first round loss to Toledo in the MAC Tournament.

Charlie Coles is throwing in the towel after 16 seasons with Miami University, 22 seasons as a collegiate head coach and nearly 50 years as a basketball coach.

Coles has more wins than any other coach in Miami history and finishes his career with a record of 355-308, posting a 263-224 mark at Miami.

Hamilton Fire Captain Steve Detherage Retires

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Captain Steve Detherage retired from the Hamilton Fire Department last week after 26 years of service with the city and 32 years in the fire service.  Captain Detherage began his fire career in West Chester before coming to Hamilton May 25, 1985.  He was promoted to Lieutenant April 4, 1995 and to Captain August 5, 1997.

Captain Detherage was certified as a Hazardous Materials technician and paramedic, and held certifications in River Rescue, Confined Space and Rope Rescue.  He served at Station 25 on Erie Blvd. for 10 years on the Hazardous Materials team.  He later worked on the aerial tower at Headquarters where he helped manage and supervise the Technical Rescue team which included River, Rope and Confined Space.

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - On Friday, March 10, 2012, at 6 pm the Oxford Community Arts Center’s Second Friday event will host an opening reception for the artists in three featured the exhibits.  The “Home Again” and “Home to the Arts” exhibits were curated specifically to showcase OCAC’s resident artists and a few of Oxfords Art Collectors for the Arts Center’s only annual major fundraiser, the “Home to the Arts Gala” which will be held on March 17th.

OXFROD, OH (FOX19) - Roots run deep, and the women of White Orchid enjoy exploring their cultural heritages; using traditional Celtic music as their vessel and inspiration. In collaboration with the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and funded with a grant from the Ruder-Beau Foundation, the Oxford Community Arts Center will be hosting a Random Acts of Music featuring White Orchid March 2, at 7:30 PM. With Amy Roark-Oblak on flute, Lindsey Duncan on Celtic harp and Laura Hazelbaker on fiddle, these ladies perform a variety of styles from the Seven Celtic nations: Eire (Ireland), Alba (Scotland), Cymru (Wales), Briezh (Brittany), Kernow (Cornwall), Mannin (Isle of Man), and Galicia (Spain), as well as some Celtic-inspired tunes of their own.

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Rita Dove, Miami University graduate and former poet laureate, was awarded a 2011 National Medal of the Arts by President Barack Obama.  Dove, who graduated in 1973, was one of eight people presented with the medal on Feb. 13.  

            Now a Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia, Dove was awarded for her contributions as a poet and author, and for advocating for diversity and vitality in her works.  At 40, she was the youngest person ever named U.S. poet laureate; she was the first African American and only the second woman to serve in that position.  Dove served as poet laureate and consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993-95.

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - A group exhibit of Fiber Arts opens with a reception to meet the artists at 6 pm on February 10, 2010 at the Oxford Community Arts Center’s Second Friday event, and will be on display in the South Parlor until March 2, 2012. 

Artists whose work is being represented include Joyce Ponder, Kathy Baxter, Nelly Bly Cogan, Pamela Howard, Carol Burke and Linda Kramer.  “Making quilts is about discovering the artist within me, and challenging myself to create beautiful objects that are visually exciting.” Joyce Ponder says when discussing her work.  “Some of my work is the result of an idea incubating for many months before it begins to materialize in the wee hours of the morning when it’s difficult to decipher dream from reality.

Deep Midwest performs at the Oxford Community Arts Center Second Friday event

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Deep Midwest is bringing their vibrant sound to the Oxford Community Arts Center's Second Friday.   OCAC’s Second Fridays Art Evening to be held on Feb 10 is a celebration of the arts. From 6 to 10 pm, this free monthly event features live music, exhibits of visual art, and a reception for the artists involved.

Deep Midwest formed in the fall of 2010 when Jeff Smith, and Vicky Agee, accomplished singers and guitarists, met and found they shared a desire to perform vocally rich, acoustic music.
