New McCullough-Hyde finance boss has local ties

OXFORD (FOX19) - A finance professional who went to grad school at Xavier and worked at St. Elizabeth North in Covington is returning to the Tri-State to become the Chief Financial Office of McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital.

John Clements, CAP, FHFMA, will take the position of Vice President and CFO effective April 18, 2011.          

Clements comes to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital from Greenville, Kentucky where he served as CFO at Muhlenberg Community Hospital since 2004.  Before that, Mr. Clements had a number of years experience in financial positions at both small and large hospitals in Kentucky and Ohio – including eleven years of service as both VP and AVP of Finance at St.

 Miami professor receives Ohio Faculty Innovation Award

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Anna Dollár, associate professor of mechanical and manufacturing engineering at Miami University, was among 10 statewide recipients of the University System of Ohio’s Faculty Innovator Awards, which recognizes creative ways to reduce the cost of course materials for their students while also improving educational content.

               Dollár co-authored an interactive, web-based engineering statics course as part of the Carnegie Mellon Open Learning Initiative (with Paul Steif of Carnegie Mellon).  A learning dashboard of 18 modules – each based on a set of learning objectives, with expository tests and interactive exercises – record student answers and provide the results in aggregated form to instructors.

Popular Hamilton Fire Captain Set to Retire

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - A familiar face is retiring from the Hamilton Fire Department Friday March 11, 2011. Captain William “Steve” Timmer is hanging up his fire helmet after 33 years of service to the Hamilton community. Captain Timmer began his career on January 3, 1978. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 7, 1985 and to Captain January 6, 1989.

He served in various roles throughout his career including Lieutenant and Captain of the Hazardous Materials Team at its inception in 1986, River, Rope and Confined Space Rescue as well as Paramedic. He was also a Fire Instructor for many years.

He was the grant writer for the department since 2003and was successful in procuring federal funds totaling more than $2 million dollars. Grant awards included funding for bunker gear replacement, new radios, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and a Health Wellness program for the department that continues today.

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Hamilton Firefighter David Barrett retired from the fire department on Friday March 4, 2011. He was hired December 6, 1986. David held various certifications throughout his career including that of Paramedic, River Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue Technician and Confined Space Rescue Technician. David served most of his career as an apparatus driver/operator on the aerial truck company and engine company. He was assigned to the Technical Rescue unit at Headquarters for 10 years. He finished his career at Station 21 on Brookwood Avenue.

Chief Schutte states, “David was a valuable asset to the department with his knowledge and skills especially in the area of technical rescue. I wish him well in retirement. He will be missed.”

Miami student's upcoming books are Greek to everyone

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - A Miami University senior who originally was a political science major became so enamored of Latin and Greek that he is now writing books in those languages.

After Evan Hayes started college, he took a Latin class almost on a whim, thinking it wouldn't be too big a deal because he had studied Latin in High School.

He ended up majoring in classics and philosophy, with a minor in medieval studies.  He also studied computer languages along the way.  He now has won the $31 thousand Joanna Jackson Memorial Prize, which is awarded annually to one Miami student.

Hayes is planning to spend his first year after graduation producing 12 readers in ancient Greek and Latin for students of those languages, telling stories that are accompanied by glossaries and page-by-page definitions of less-common words to help them learn.  The computer skills come in because Hayes is using programs to handle the bookkeeping for cross-referencing the info

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Hamilton Police Lieutenant John Nethers graduated from the Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program on February 18. Lieutenant Nethers is the first command officer from the Hamilton Police Department to graduate from this program.

CLEE is a year long, voluntary self and professional development program that certifies that its graduates have mastered eight essential knowledge areas for effective law enforcement executives: Ethics; Change Management; Vision, Mission, and Organizational Guiding Principles; Strategic Planning; Human Resources and Team Facilitation; Interpersonal Relations; Police Resource Allocation and Budgeting, and Managing the External Environment.  CLEE graduates are prepared to more effectively lead their organizations, serve their communities, and fulfill their individual career goals.

Hamilton Fire Lieutenant Retires

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Hamilton Fire Lieutenant Dave Abney retired from the fire department on Saturday February 19, 2011. Lieutenant Abney served 27 years with City. He was hired August 2, 1983; was promoted to Paramedic April 12, 1989, to Paramedic Supervisor June 5, 1990 and Lieutenant July 15, 1999.

Lieutenant Abney served many years at Station 24 on Main and Millville and finished his career at Station 26 in Lindenwald on Laurel. Lieutenant Abney’s son, Eric, currently serves on the Department as a promoted Paramedic and Union President.
