CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The MLB announced the 30 winners of the 2013 Honorary Bat Girl Contest that recognizes baseball fans who have been affected by breast cancer and demonstrate a commitment to eradicating the disease. 

The winner for the Cincinnati Reds is Josie Shuler of Fairfield Township, who will be recognized during on-field pregame ceremonies Sunday, May 12 (Reds vs. Milwaukee Brewers, 1:10 p.m.) at Great American Ball Park.

Josie will receive complimentary game tickets for her and her family, a commemorative Reds jersey and pink wrist bands. Louisville Slugger will be sending her a personalized pink bat engraved with her name.

Police search for missing West Chester man

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) -West Chester Police have issued a Missing Adult Alert for an elderly man suffering from dementia.

Michael Hayward, 80, was last seen at 11:00 a.m. Saturday on Woodland Hills Drive. Authorities say Hayward was expected to be en route to the Milford area from West Chester.

Hayward suffers from dementia, diabetes and other medical conditions and may be in need of medications.

Police believe that Hayward is driving a dark blue 2001 Ford F150 with Ohio plates FSV9660.

Anyone with information on Hayward's whereabouts is asked to call 1-866-693-9171 or call 911.

Local residents named Grandparents of the Year

Local residents named Grandparents of the Year

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University’s gerontology center and the Knolls of Oxford have announced Cincinnati residents Gloria Heather (grandmother of Katherine Toensmeyer) and Paul Scheve (grandfather of Krista Warren) the 2013 Grandparents of the Year. 

Jack and Toni Purdy of Harvard, Mass., (grandparents of Allyson Farren) will also share the honor.

The 11th Grandparents of the Year recognition honors Miami University students’ grandparents who are inspirational to their grandchildren.  The awards are based on essay and video nominations that highlight the importance of relationships between grandparents and grandchildren and the role grandparents play in supporting the students’ growth and development.

A ceremony and reception honoring this year’s winners will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18 in 154 Marcum Conference Center.  It is free and open to the public.

Miami alum to deliver keynote speech at computer science conference

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University’s Computer Science and Software Engineering Student & Alumni Conference will feature a keynote presentation from alumnus Juan Gilbert

The class of 1991 grad will speak at 2:15 p.m. Friday, April 12 in Patten Auditorium (Benton Hall).

Now in its 11th year, the conference allows CSE/ECE students (majors and minors) and alumni to hear presentations on current technologies and explore career opportunities.

Gilbert is the presidential endowed chair in computing at Clemson University.  He also leads the human centered computing (HCC) division lab in the university’s school of computing.

A Hamilton native, Gilbert was honored by the mayor led city council when it declared February 2012 “Dr. Juan Gilbert Month."

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Patrol’s Tpr. Howard promoted to Sergeant at the Hamilton Post

COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) - Tpr. Dexter T. Howard was promoted to the rank of sergeant by Colonel John Born, Patrol superintendent, during a ceremony at the Patrol’s Academy.

Sgt. Howard will transfer from his current assignment at the Cincinnati Metro Post to serve as an assistant post commander at the Hamilton Post.

Sgt. Howard began his Patrol career in December 2004 as a member of the 143rd Academy Class. He earned his commission in June of the following year and was assigned to the Batavia Post. As a trooper, he has also served at the Hamilton, Xenia, and the Cincinnati Metro Posts.

Sgt. Howard received a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the Miami University in 2001.

Hamilton woman appointed new judge for Butler County Domestic Relations court

HAMILTON,  OH (FOX19) -  A new judege has been appointed to serve on the Butler County Domestic Relations Court.

On Wednesday, Governor John Kasich announced that City of Hamilton lawyer Margot B. Halcomb will assume the office vacated by Sharon Kennedy, who was elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio.

Halcomb will assume office on April 2, 2013, and must run in November 2014 to retain the seat for the unexpired term, which ends January 3, 2017.

Halcomb received a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in Oxford, and earned her juris doctorate from Capital University Law School. From 1996 to 2007, she served as a magistrate on the Hamilton Municipal Court.

Halcomb has been involved in organizations such as the Hamilton Rotary Club, YWCA of Hamilton, the Hamilton Jr. Women’s League, and the Great Miami Valley YMCA. Since 2007, she has been the vice president and trust officer at First Financial Bank.
