Season of After-Hours on the Square summer concerts begin Thursday

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - The 2013 season of the First Financial Bank After-Hours on The Square concert series kicks off Thursday, May 23.

Naked Karate Girls, Lt. Dan’s New Legs and My Sister Sarah are just a few of the bands headlining this year’s concert series.

The concerts are from 6 to 9 p.m. each Thursday on The Square @ Union Centre, 9285 Centre Pointe Drive. The Square is located off I-75, just west of Muhlhauser Road, with nearby parking and  is free and open to the public.

Alcohol cannot be brought into the concert due to restrictions of the liquor permit. Proceeds from beverage sales benefit the event and local non-profit groups.

The 2013 schedule is as follows:

Butler County Big Brothers Big Sisters nears fundraising goal

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County announced on Tuesday that they are more than half way to meeting their goal of raising $10,000 to provide mentors to ten children currently waiting for a Big Brother or Sister.

According to the Firstgiving website, Big Brothers Big Sisters of butler County has reached 52% of their goal.

There are currently 140 Butler County children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister.  The children whom we serve are living in some of the toughest environments in Butler County.

Ross Police honor guard making presentation at Reds game

ROSS TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - The Ross Township police department will have a front and center role at the Reds vs. Cubs on Sunday. May 26.

The Ross Township Police Department Honor Guard will present the Colors at the Great American Ball Park at the 1:10pm game.

Chief Kramer said “We Started an Honor Guard a Couple of Years ago and I think it’s an Honor to be selected especially during the Memorial Day Weekend”.

The Color Guard will take the field at 12:57pm for the presentation of the colors.

Butler County Visitors Bureau wins NASC award

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB) recently received the National Association of Sports Commissions’ (NASC) 2013 Outstanding Online Presence award during the closing ceremonies at the NASC Symposium in Louisville, KY.

The Bureau was evaluated on the effectiveness of their overall web presence, including social media platforms, in marketing Butler County as a leading sports event destination. The BCVB was up against seven other visitors bureaus and sports commissions from across the nation including one other competitor from Ohio.

The NASC honors 10 members each year for their outstanding initiatives in the sports and events industry. Members are recognized in five categories: Outstanding Marketing Campaign, Outstanding Locally Created Event, Outstanding Online Presence, Convention & Visitors Bureau Member of the Year, and Sports Commission Member of the Year.

Pajama Day at Fairfield East Elementary School honors memory of fellow student

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Students at Fairfield East Elementary School are honoring the memory of a student who lost her battle with brain cancer this year.

Sarah Nelson  passed away in March from brain cancer. This past February, Sarah decided to go to North Elementary principal Mrs. Stacy, and propose a fundraising event for DIPG.

The event would allow students to wear pajamas to school for a donation of one dollar. During that first Pajama Day, FFN students and staff raised over $700.00.

May happens to be not only Brain Tumor Awareness month but Sarah’s birthday month as well.

A fellow 3rd grade student had the idea to honor Sarah on her birthday, May 10th, and support another Pajama Day at the school.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Menchie's Frozen Yogurt is giving back to teh community around them.

In addition to supporting local charities, and organizations, Menchie himself spreads smiles within the community through visits to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, as well as local libraries, school functions, and community events.

"One of the things that enticed me most about starting a Menchie’s franchise was its focus on spreading smiles throughout your community," stated Hach, who is a resident of West Chester. With locations in both West Chester and Fairfield, Hach currently supports local schools, churches, YMCAs, and non-profit organizations such as Reach Out Lakota and Shared Harvest Food Bank, through donations, food drives, and fundraisers.

Since opening his West Chester location in August 2012, Hach has made guest experience and community involvement a fundamental part of his business plan.

Middletown night at the Reds game

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The first of a three game series will be a tribute to Middletown natives.The Reds game on Monday, May 6 is Middletown night.

Middletown, Ohio natives Chris Carter and Kayla Harrison will be honored during the annual Middletown Night at the ballpark. Carter, who is a 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Harrison, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist in judo, will serve as the Honorary Captain of the game.
